TITLE: CASE WORKER INTERN

REPORTS TO: PROGRAM Director, Safe Homes Project

LOCATION: 503 5th Avenue, 4th floor, Brooklyn, New York 11215

HOURS: 28 Hours/Week

SALARY: $0 (This Internship is unpaid).

JOB SUMMARY:

The Case Worker Intern provides a full array of case management, counseling, advocacy, and self-sufficiency services to domestic violence (DV) survivors including underserved populations such as recent and undocumented immigrant and LGBTQ survivors and their children. The Intern will ensure that a strength-based and trauma-focused approach is implemented at all of the Safe Homes Project’s (SHP) sites.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Provide in-person and telephone (hotline) crisis intervention, safety assessments, case management services, counseling, housing advocacy, self-sufficiency assistance, and related information, support, information, and referrals for participants in the program.
  • Offer services at SHP’s home office and at the Brooklyn Family Justice Center as needed.
  • Co-facilitate weekly support groups for survivors at either site as needed.
  • Participate in weekly supervision, case conferences, trauma-informed practice training, and other relevant trainings in order to offer the highest possible quality services to participants.
  • Utilize required agency and funder databases to record statistical and narrative case-related documentation.
  • Assist DV survivors in understanding the full range of criminal justice and community-based services available at the Brooklyn Family Justice Center and at the SHP home office.
  • Conduct educational and outreach activities in the community to inform about SHP’s services and provide DV-related information
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or similar, relevant field required
  • Bilingual -- English/Spanish preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and as part of a team, and work under pressure.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the week and engage participants in varied settings.
