Title: Social Work Intern - Juvenile Justice NSP (Rose and Blum)

Reports to: Assistant Director of Social Services

Location: 280 Shepherd Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11208 and 480 Vermont Street, Brooklyn NY 11208

Hours: 21 Hours/Week HYBRID

Job Summary: The Social Work Intern works collaboratively with the wider inter-disciplinary team to assess treatment needs of participants, plan and coordinate services and provide short term therapy where indicated. The Social Work Intern is expected to uphold Good Shepherd Services’ Mission and demonstrate “We See What Can Be” in their approach to providing care to participants.

Critical core competencies for successful performance in this role are:

  • Some basic knowledge of mental health practices, and their impact on individuals and groups.
  • Ability to empathize with participants and staff members, practicing active listening to validate their experiences and emotions.
  • Sensitivity, experience and/or knowledge of cultural factors influencing mental health and healing responses and treatment and a commitment to cultural humility.
  • Understanding of the importance of self-awareness and self-care to enhance personal and community well-being.
  • Willingness to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide support to participants and staff members.
  • Commitment to upholding ethical standards, professional boundaries, confidentiality, and accurate record keeping practices.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development in the field of healing-informed care and mental health.
  • Commitment to meeting expectations of the internship.

Major Duties:

  • Conduct mental health treatment evaluations with participants and their families.

  • Establish treatment goals for children, utilizing historical and current available information in collateral records

  • Provide short term therapy to participants, individually and group

  • Collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team

  • Promote integration with community resources and?skill-building

  • Provide psychoeducation and wellness education

  • Communicate with family, case planning staff and medical health team

  • Participate in case conferences and treatment team meetings

  • Complete required documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) timely, and according to agency standards.

  • Attend relevant trainings as needed

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in accredited MSW, MFT, or other relevant Masters-lever behavioral health program.

  • Demonstrated competence in verbal, written, organizational and prioritization skills, along with strong computer skills.

  • Must be able to use public transportation systems, including subways and buses to attend various meetings and complete other duties.

  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based, youth development perspective and trauma-informed perspective.
